Chapter 17: The Winter Ball
Damien bowed his head over the newel post.
Ravielle looked past him at her father.
"Do it in front of the court, then," she said. "I'll be there. I'll wear red."
"You don't own anything red."
"I will by then."
She went up the stairs past all three of them.
The duchess was the only one who watched her go.
The dressmaker on the Street of Needles worked three weeks on credit.
Ravielle had told her she'd either pay at the New Year or be dead, and either way the dressmaker would have the story.
One note came from the north in all that time.
It was four words in a hand Ravielle knew, pushed under her door by a man in a plain coat.
"Over the top. K."
On the night of the Winter Ball she walked into the imperial ballroom in crimson silk.
It was cut low and plain, and her mother's sapphires lay at her throat.
The music didn't stop.
But the dancing faltered all the way down the room.
Three hundred heads turned, and Ravielle let them look.
"Good God," said the general by the door. "She's back."
"And I had such hopes for the beige," said the bishop.
She took a glass of wine from a footman and drank half of it.
