Chapter 6: The Goose

Kyrian let go of Ravielle's wrist.

He didn't step back, though.

"Go to bed, Belle."

"I'm not twelve." Mirabelle came into the room and set her candle on the desk with a click. "She called me the goose, Kyrian. In front of three hundred people. For a year I couldn't laugh at a ball without someone honking."

"I remember," Ravielle said.

Mirabelle turned to her.

She was taller than Ravielle, and she had grown into her wide mouth since Ravielle had seen her last.

"You apologized to me, you know," she said. "On my birthday. With tears. You brought me a cake."

"Did you eat it?"

"I gave it to the dogs."

"Good," Ravielle said. "I wouldn't have trusted a gift from me either."

That threw Mirabelle.

She looked at her brother, then back at Ravielle.

"So you're not going to cry for me this time."

"No," Ravielle said. "Not tonight. And not because it would make you feel better."

"Then what are you doing in my brother's house at nine at night?"

"Being given terms. Apparently I'm to dine with you on Sunday."

Mirabelle's eyes narrowed.

"Then I'll sit across from you," she said. "I want a good view."

She took her candle and left.

On Sunday she kept her word.

Vaelhart's long table was set for fourteen.

Kyrian had invited exactly the people who would carry the story of it to every drawing room in the capital by Monday.

They were two old generals, a bishop, and a banker with his wife.

And the countess.

She was the countess whose bodice Ravielle had once exposed to the court, and she sat in emerald silk two chairs down, with a smile.

Ravielle wore the black riding habit again, because it was all she had that wasn't beige.

Nobody dined in a riding habit.

She watched every woman at the table notice it.

Kyrian sat at the head with his face.

Mirabelle sat directly across from Ravielle and watched her eat soup.
