Chapter 15: The Cellar
The cellar under the bakery had been a coal cellar once, and it still smelled of cold stone.
Nonna kept her flour down there, forty sacks stacked against the wall.
We sat the driver on the fifth step from the bottom with his leg wrapped in a clean dish towel.
Nonna took the top step, behind him, with the shotgun across her knees and her rosary wound around the barrel.
"I changed your diapers," she told him. "Not you. Your father's. He drove for my husband."
"Signora, I'm sorry."
"Good. Be sorry loudly."
Nico was upstairs in a bed with the nanny watching the door, three hours before dawn.
Bianca was asleep in her ward across town, and I had a man outside her door.
That left me and Santo, and a man on a stair.
Santo set his phone on a flour sack, propped against a lantern, with the red dot glowing.
"It's recording," he said. "He knows. Nobody's tricking him."
