Chapter 20: The Shooter
I ran.
I went through the pork store kitchen, past a cook with a cleaver.
The back door opened on a wet alley full of crates.
Santo was behind me, with his sleeve pressed to his face.
"Viviana, wait. Take the old man's men."
"Two of them are on my heels already."
The alley opened on a narrow street under the highway.
At the corner a gray sedan idled with its door open.
A thin man in glasses was throwing a leather bag into the back seat.
"Stop," I said.
He saw me and jumped for the wheel.
I fired once, through the open door, into the tire.
The sedan sagged and bucked, and he jumped out and ran.
He ran, elbows out, with his glasses flying.
He got forty feet.
Santo caught him by the collar, hauled him around, and slammed him against a brick wall.
"Don't," the bookkeeper said, a thin high wail. "Please, I only keep the books."
"You paid sixty thousand dollars in cash out of a bread box," I said.
