Chapter 14: The Circle

The challenge was for noon, and the yard was already filling by the time Torin laced his wrist guards.

I stood in the doorway of our room and watched him do it.

"You don't have to answer him," I said. "Brage is a fool with a sword."

"A fool with a sword can still get lucky."

"You are the War God."

"I'm a man who has had four hours of sleep," he said mildly. "I'd like to end this before he says your name again."

He pulled the last strap tight with his teeth.

I shut the door and dropped the bar.

He raised his eyebrows.

"Ylva. The envoys are waiting."

"They will wait."

I crossed the room and put my hands flat on his leather jerkin.

I shoved him backward until his shoulders hit the wall.

His eyes went gold.

"You're not going out there with my name in his mouth and your mind on a fight," I said. "I want you thinking about me."

"I am always thinking about you."

"Then prove it. Quickly."

I knelt, because I wanted to, and undid the lacing of his trousers with fingers that did not shake.
