Chapter 17: The Silver Cup
On the fortieth morning, the Alphas of the north rode into Hartfell under their packs' banners.
They filled the great hall from wall to wall.
The benches had been scrubbed and the long fires lit.
Kjell had polished the black slab until a man could see his face in it.
I wore the grey wool dress, because it was mine, and my mother's brooch on the collar.
Torin wore his dark fur coat and his braid.
He stood on the dais, the host of the Moot, and the Alphas of the north gave him the nod that one wolf gives another.
I stood at his right with a wine jug in both hands.
It was a heavy jug, and my arms ached.
Gudrun sat on the guest bench in black silk, with her veil pushed back.
Vigdis sat beside her in white, and she did not look at me.
The rider who had come under the flag was gone from the kitchen, and a guard stood at every door.
Falk's Alpha sat with his son's empty seat beside him.
Brage stood at the end of the dais, with a covered cup in both hands and a face the color of tallow.
