Chapter 22: Ask Me

The Alphas rode out at noon, and by dusk Hartfell was quiet.

I spent the afternoon in the north tower with my steward's first letter and a pot of tea gone cold.

I read the same line over and over.

At sundown I put the letter down, took off my glasses, and went to find my husband.

He was in the yard, alone, running a whetstone down the edge of a sword he did not need.

He saw me and set it aside.

"You said tonight," he said.

"I did."

"I have been thinking about it since I woke."

"So have I."

We climbed the stair together without speaking.

Torin shut our door, and dropped the bar.

The room was cold, with the window open an inch on the dark, and the fire made a small gold circle on the stone.

I stood in the middle of the floor and turned to face him.

"I want to undress you," I said. "I want to do it slowly, and I want you to stand there and let me."

His eyes flared.

"Yes," he said.

I started with his coat.

I pushed it off his shoulders and hung it on the chair.

Then the buttons of his shirt, one at a time, my knuckles brushing his skin.
