Chapter 24: The Memorial
The Carrie Thurmond House stood on a corner in Fells Point.
It had four stories of new brick, forty doors, and a lobby that smelled of paint.
The money for it came out of Wyatt's second ledger.
A federal judge had ordered it frozen and then returned to the fund.
The first veterans had moved in on a Tuesday.
On Saturday, the building held its memorial.
I stood in the lobby in a navy dress with a silver bracelet on my wrist.
Two hundred people filled the room, and half of them wore ribbons.
My mother sat near the front in her wheelchair, in a lavender cardigan.
The man in the faded Navy cap sat on one side of her, and his wife on the other.
She had told everyone within reach that her daughter was dating the Director.
She had also told them he was too thin.
Jack hated speeches, and he stood in his dress uniform beside the covered easel.
His hands were behind his back, and there was sweat on his lip.
I had never seen the uniform before.
It was dark blue, with a row of ribbons across the chest and eagles on the shoulders.
The cloth made his gray eyes look like steel.
The nameplate over his pocket said THURMOND.
I understood, standing there, why a country had been afraid of him.
