On the twenty-first of December, the Lodge was full again.
Two hundred wolves sat on the benches, and this time nobody was waiting for me to cry.
The long fire burned behind the dais.
Odile stood in front of it in her green dress with the silver at her throat.
She looked less tired than she had in weeks.
I sat in the second row, in the dark wool coat I'd worn the night of the Gathering.
Casimir sat beside me with his hands on his knees.
I could feel him through the bond, steady and tight.
Breathe, I thought at him.
I am, he thought back. Mostly.
The council chair got up from his stool and opened the pack's book on the table.
"Before the Solstice words," he said, "a correction to the record."
He cleared his throat.
"On the seventeenth of October, Sigrid Ashgrove sent the Alpha a registered letter of refusal."
He went on. "It was never entered in this book, and that was wrong."
"I enter it now."
He wrote for a long minute, with the pen scratching in the quiet.
