Chapter 7: The Question
I was standing at the stove in Casimir's white shirt when the back door opened without a knock.
It was Sunday, a little after six, and the lake was still grey.
Leighton Arkwright filled the doorway in his charcoal coat.
He had not shaved, and his collar was buttoned one hole off.
I had never once seen him look as though he had not slept.
"Sigrid," he said.
I set the coffeepot down on the burner very carefully.
"This is my house," I said. "You don't come into my kitchen."
"Who has read it?" he said.
I stared at him.
He had not said good morning, or my name a second time, or anything about the Gathering.
"Read what?" I said.
"The letter."
"Nobody," I said. "You took the copy out of my hand and put it in your coat."
