Chapter 10: The Long Table

Garret read the petition over Perry's shoulder.

He went quiet.

"I'll go to Lake Forest," he said. "I'll talk to her."

"You do that."

"Where are you going?"

Perry was already pulling his coat on over his robe.

"To get dressed. And then to the Burkhart Hotel."

"Perry, the doorman is mine to deal with. He's my employee. He bit me."

"He bit you. He went for my baby." Perry zipped up his coat. "My alley. My kid. My turn."

Garret looked at him for a second.

Then he said, "Take Brianne."

"Obviously."

The Burkhart Hotel lobby at eleven on a Sunday morning was full of people checking out.

Rolling suitcases. A bellhop with a cart. Two women at the front desk.

The doorman was at his station inside the revolving door.

Black coat. Brass buttons. Cap.

There was a purple bruise on the left side of his jaw the exact shape of a tap shoe heel.

He saw Perry coming across the marble, and every bit of color left his face.

"Good morning," Perry said, loud enough for the front desk.

"Mr. Mulvaney." The doorman's voice cracked.

"How's your jaw?"

He didn't answer.

He was limping.

"You held the door for me nine times," Perry said. "You told me once that you liked my shoes."

The bellhop stopped pushing his cart.

The two women at the front desk had stopped typing.

"Last night you tried to bite my stomach open in an alley."

"I don't know what you're..."

"I can smell you," Perry said quietly. "I smelled you over the blood. Menthol gum."

The doorman swallowed.

Brianne stepped up next to Perry with her arms crossed.

"Your Alpha bled all over my brother's office desk, buddy," she said. "And you left three silver caps in him. I've got them in a coffee mug. You want them back?"
