Chapter 17: The Showcase
The showcase had been set for Tuesday afternoon at the church hall on Kedzie.
The first day of winter break. The day of the Cold Moon.
On Saturday Dolores walked Perry down the long hall to a pair of white doors and opened them.
A ballroom with three chandeliers and a little stage.
"Hold it here," she said.
"Mrs. Burkhart, it's forty kids from Irving Park."
"The pack gathers at my house before every court. They'll all be here Tuesday afternoon anyway." She looked at the empty floor. "Let them see what they're voting on."
So on Tuesday a yellow school bus came up the half-mile gravel drive in Lake Forest.
Forty kids in sequins got off it screaming.
The tap moms got out of their cars and stood on the gravel and stared up at the house.
"Perry," said the tap mom from Albany Park. "Who did you marry?"
"Nobody. Yet. Get inside, it's cold."
The kids filled the front rows of the ballroom.
The tap families filled the middle rows with their phones up.
And the pack filled the back of the room and the walls and the doorways.
