Chapter 24: Recital
Perry heard him come down the stairs behind him.
Garret stopped at the office door with his hands in his pockets.
"You signed up for my recital," Perry said.
"I asked the teacher first."
"You didn't ask me."
"I asked your nephew. He's the one who taught me." Garret looked at the sheet. "You can cross me off."
Perry took the pencil off its string and looked at Garret's name for a long time.
Then he wrote a word next to it.
Tuesdays.
"Adult beginners," he said. "Seven o'clock. Every week until the recital. You don't miss one. You don't get special treatment. If the mailman's better than you, he goes in the front row."
"The mailman is better than me."
"Then you'd better practice."
Garret practiced.
Every Tuesday at seven he stood in the back row of adult beginners in his size-twelve shoes.
He stood between a dental hygienist and a retired mailman while Perry called out counts.
He practiced in the Tower. Perry knew, because Garret's assistant called Brianne to ask what the tapping noise was.
He practiced on the back stairs at midnight while Maggie watched him from her bouncy seat with her eyes gold.
