Chapter 4: Sugar

"What do you mean, wash her hands?" I asked.

Ewan pushed the wooden horse deeper into his fist.

"She said not to tell."

"Who said?"

"The pretty lady." His eyes slid to the nurse, still asleep in her chair, and back to me. "She said if I tell, the honey bread stops."

I took his small cold hand in both of mine.

"Ewan, nobody is stopping the honey bread. I'll bake it myself if I have to. Will you tell me what happened?"

He thought about it with his whole face.

"I went to find you," he said. "Before the feast. I wanted to show you my horse's new leg."

The horse had lost a leg in a fall off the nursery stairs, and the carpenter had glued it back.

"Nurse was talking to the cook. I went in the kitchen. You weren't there. The pretty lady was."

"What was she doing?"

"She had my cup. The milk cup with the blue stripe." He frowned. "She turned her ring round and round, like this."

He twisted an invisible ring on his finger, stone to the inside.

"Then she shook a little sugar in. It was green sugar."

My stomach dropped through the floor.

"Green," I said.

"I said, can I have some? She said no, it's only for grown-ups' tea. She said it was a secret and I mustn't tell, and then she wiped her hands, and wiped them again."

"Did she see that you saw?"

"She smiled." He looked at the horse. "She's always smiling."

A cold, clear rage went through me.

It was so quiet I almost didn't recognize it.

"You did well," I said. "That was brave. You've told me, and I'm the only one who needs to know right now."
