Chapter 20: The Groom's Mother Sits

"I'm your photographer, Miss Eugenia," I said. "I go where the pictures are."

"Then you'll take them in my parlor," she said. "The tower is family."

She patted Price's cheek and went out, and the glass door swung shut behind her.

Price put the velvet box back in his drawer, and his hands were shaking.

The rehearsal dinner was Friday at seven, at the long table in the Rountree dining room.

There were forty people: the wedding party, the preacher, the bride's family, and the chief at Miss Eugenia's right hand.

I shot the toasts with my camera on a strap and my left hand jammed in my jeans pocket.

It burned every time Miss Eugenia walked behind my chair.

She wore a gray silk dress with the camel cardigan over it, and she never once took the cardigan off.

Jesse was outside in his truck at the bottom of the drive, because nobody had invited him.

At ten the goddaughter's father stood up and toasted "the girl Price was always going to marry."

Price raised his glass and didn't drink.
