Chapter 24: Seven Plates
"Tell her yes," I called through the door. "Tell her I'll be there."
"Tell her yourself!" the boy yelled, and his sneakers went thumping off the porch.
Jesse laughed into my shoulder until the bed shook.
On Sunday, the first of November, I drove to my parents' house for dinner with my good camera on the seat beside me.
Jesse rode with me in his new deputy's uniform, because he'd worked the overnight and come straight from it.
Callie and Price were already there.
Price was on a ladder at the gutter in his church shoes.
Daddy was holding the ladder and telling him he was doing it wrong.
The widow sat on the porch swing in her quilted robe over her church dress, with a blanket on her knees.
"There's my photographer," she said. "Come here, sugar, let me look at you."
In the kitchen Mom was at the cabinet.
I stopped in the doorway and watched her.
She took down a plate, and another, and another.
She whispered under her breath, murmur after murmur, the way she prayed at church.
