Chapter 13: Emergency Board
The Wheelwright Group boardroom is on the second floor of the stone building above the barrel room.
It has a table made from one slab of walnut, eleven leather chairs and tall windows that look down on the vines.
On Friday morning the vines were white with snow, and the room was warm enough that the lawyer had taken off his gray overcoat.
I came in on Rhys's arm, because Helene's notice had said fiancee and observer, and I decided to be both.
I wore my navy wool dress, my mother's glasses and my canvas jacket over the top.
Nobody told me to take the jacket off.
"Miss Aldahl," Helene said from the head of the table.
"How good of you to come."
"Mrs. Wheelwright," I said.
She wore dove gray and her pearls, and she looked as if she had slept ten hours.
Her eyes went to my hand on her son's sleeve, and then to the jacket, and then away.
She had not spoken to either of us since the dinner at the vineyard house.
She had sent a lawyer through the snow at midnight instead.
"Observers sit at the wall," she said.
"There is a chair."
It was a straight wooden chair by the window, a little behind the table, where the person who takes the minutes sits.
I sat in it and took a scale ticket pad out of my jacket pocket, and a pencil.
Helene's eyes followed the pad.
"Are you planning to write something?" she asked.
