Chapter 16: Tobin
Signe's POV
The Seattle paper had put the story on its website at five that morning.
I read it on Rhys's phone in the cellar office with a blanket around my shoulders.
The headline said, "Valley Heiress Holds Water Hostage."
There was a photograph of the deed, the same one I had put on the ballroom screen, and next to it a photograph of my brother.
It was a still from his western.
He sat a horse in a long coat with a hat pulled down, and under it the caption said, "Her brother, TV's Tobin Wade, has not been seen in the valley in three years."
"They gave it to a woman at the paper who never leaves Seattle," Rhys said.
"My mother has a friend there."
"It doesn't say Anders," I said.
"It says the Aldahl heiress."
"It says you," he said quietly.
"Not your father.
"She has found out who the water belongs to, and she has decided to make you the villain."
I put the phone down on the blotter.
My hands were steady, which was how I knew I was very angry.
"I need to go home," I said.
"My father will have read it."
Rhys drove me to the farm in his car behind the plow, and we did not speak.
The snow had stopped.
The sky over the Blue Mountains was hard and clear, and every field between the road and the horizon was white.
When we turned in at the Aldahl gate, there was a car I did not know in the yard.
It was a rented sedan, dark gray, with a Pasco airport tag on the mirror.
A man was standing in the field beyond the farmhouse in a stained canvas work coat and a seed-company cap, looking at the snow.
