Chapter 13: Dinner for Biagio
Nico did not rise from his brother's bed.
He folded Serafina's letter in half, then in half again, and put it in the inside pocket of his shirt, over the scar.
He did it slowly, with Biagio watching from the door.
"Biagio," he said.
"Boss."
"You're out late."
"The gate man said you'd gone to the back house," Biagio said.
"I thought, at this hour, with that room finally open.
"I thought you might want a friend."
His eyes went across the room, to the coat on the chair, the boots on the floor, the toothbrush in the mug.
They rested on me, on the rug, buttoning my sweater with fingers that would not work.
I could not tell what he had seen from the stairs.
I could not tell how long he had stood there in the dark.
Nico stood up.
He took his time about it.
When he spoke, his voice was exactly what it was at the dinner table, courteous and level and a little tired.
"I wanted to see where he slept," he said.
"My wife asked, and I couldn't say no."
"Of course," said Biagio.
"It's a hard thing, a locked room."
"It is."
"Carmela will be glad," Biagio said.
"She's been afraid of it for years."
"Come to dinner tomorrow," Nico said.
"Eight o'clock, in the long dining room.
"Just the three of us and my mother."
Biagio's face did not move.
I watched it as closely as I have ever watched a monitor.
"Honored, Boss," Biagio said.
