Chapter 21: Sit Down, Biagio
Biagio sat down.
He did it slowly, with his glass still in his hand, and the carnation fell off his lapel onto the cloth.
Nobody at the long table said a word.
"Carmela," Nico said, "would you take the boys upstairs."
It was not a question, and my mother-in-law did not treat it as one.
She came down the table with her chin up and her black eyes wet.
She took Luca by one hand and Gianni by the other, and Teo walked behind her with the seahorse.
"Nonna," Gianni said, "are we in trouble?"
"No, caro," said Carmela.
"Not you."
The door closed behind them.
I sat down.
I had to.
My knees would not hold me.
Nico stood at the head of the table with a folded sheet in his hand.
He did not unfold it.
"Forty people in this room have eaten at this table for fifty years," he said.
"Some of you taught me to swim.
"Some of you were at my father's grave.
"I am going to tell you what happened to my brother, and I'd ask that you do not interrupt me until I am done."
"Dominic," said the oldest of the captains, from the left.
"We're listening."
"Five years ago in February my brother Rocco was shot on the Bolivar ferry road," Nico said.
"I was told it was the Houston family.
"I swore a vendetta on that man at this table.
"Some of you drank on it."
A low sound went down the left side.
"It was a lie," he said.
"I have been to Houston.
"I have asked the man's wife to forgive me, in her own house, and she did not, and she was right.
"My brother was killed by men from this wharf.
"They were sent by someone at this table."
He unfolded the sheet.
"I'm going to read you a letter," he said.
"It was in my brother's desk, in the room that my mother locked.
