Chapter 7: Terms

He asked me to marry him in the garden, on the fifth Thursday, at ten at night.

It was October by then, and the heat had finally broken.

The compound's live oaks dripped with a thin cool rain, and the garden was lit by a single lantern hung from the chapel door.

The twins were asleep in Teo's room with Teo between them.

I had watched Teo tuck the blanket around Luca's feet himself.

Nico sat on the stone bench with his elbows on his knees.

He wore a dark coat, and he hadn't shaved, and he looked like a man waiting for a verdict.

"I'm going to say something that won't sound like a proposal," he said.

"Good," I said.

"I don't want one."

"All right."

I sat beside him.

The bench was wet and cold through my skirt.

"Biagio told the family on Sunday that the doctor is a risk," Nico said.

"He said that a woman who has been in the house five weeks and knows the nursery, the kitchen and the study is a risk to us.

"He said she may have come on purpose."

"I did," I said.

"He doesn't know that, but he's guessed it," Nico said.

"And?" I said.

"And on this island, a doctor in a Vasari house with no ring is a stranger who might be a witness," Nico said.

"A Vasari wife can't be touched.

"No one would lay a hand on her, or her children, or her mother in Port Arthur.

"That's the one rule nobody has ever broken."
