Chapter 16: What My Brothers Brought
My second and third brothers walked into the Keane hall at noon with a briefcase and a driver.
Conrad was not with them.
He had flown back to New York the night of the lunch, and nobody had stopped him.
Desmond met them in the middle of the marble floor with both hands out.
"Gentlemen. Welcome to the family."
"We've come about the port," my second brother said.
He did not shake the offered hand.
"Naturally. Everything is in order." Desmond signaled to a guard, who set a leather folder on the hall table. "Sign the last page, and Keane Marine takes the lease. Your sister's marriage is the whole reason for it."
"Is it?" said my third brother.
He was looking past Desmond at the stairs.
I was coming down them with Rory beside me.
My husband walked on his own feet, with one hand on the rail, and the whole hall saw him do it.
The guards at the doors stood very still.
Desmond's smile did not change, but his eyes did.
"Rory, you should be resting."
"I'm rested, Uncle."
I stopped on the bottom step and looked at my brothers.
My third brother's face was gray, and he had not shaved.
He was the one who had slapped my hand away from the lighter.
"Willa," he said.
"Don't."
"Let me say it. Please."
I waited, because Desmond's guards were listening, and because I wanted them to hear it.
"I slapped your hand," he said, "because I couldn't stand to watch you light the candle. Conrad told us the night before. Both cards, the red one, the Keane money. I knew all of it."
