Chapter 20: The Real Camille
Stellan's POV
The ambulance took her to the hospital on First Hill, and I rode in the back with her hand in mine.
It was the hand I'd held to cross streets when she was six.
She kept saying, "It's too early. It's too early," and the paramedic kept saying, "You're doing great."
Cassia came behind us in her mother's car, still in the green dress.
She stayed in the hall.
I understood why, and I loved her for it.
By midnight the doctors had a name for what was happening, and they stopped it.
The contractions slowed.
They put Camille in a bed with a monitor strapped across her belly and told her she would stay on bed rest until the baby was ready.
Seven months and two weeks.
The baby was fine.
The heartbeat filled the room, fast and strong, and I couldn't stop listening to it.
Tobias arrived at one in the morning.
He was still in his tuxedo, with his tie undone, and a man in a grey coat beside him whom I took for the company's lawyer.
He stood at the foot of the bed.
"How is she?"
"Early," Camille said. "Not too early."
"Thank God." He rubbed his face. "Cam, I have to go. The board has called an emergency session. It's my whole career, you understand that. I'll be back by morning."
"They called it tonight?"
"They called it tonight."
"Because of what Cassia said."
"Because of a lie she told." He leaned over and kissed her forehead, and she let him. "Don't worry about it. I'll fix it. I always fix it."
