Chapter 13: Who Took It

I didn't say anything.

I'd waited three years for somebody in that family to say that.

Daniel took out his phone and opened a photo of a bank statement.

One line was highlighted in yellow.

A Wednesday, three years ago. 2:14 in the afternoon. One hundred and eighty thousand dollars, by online transfer.

The account it went to was in the name of Vanessa Lin.

"I was at the yard with my mother that afternoon," Daniel said. "You were at the funeral home choosing his casket. Neither of us was near a computer."

"She was your assistant."

"She had all my passwords. She paid my bills." He laughed, and it cracked in the middle. "She paid my bills, Len."

I looked at the yellow line for a long time.

Then I looked at the boardroom door at the end of the corridor.

Seven board members were still behind it, and his mother, and Vanessa with her closed laptop.

"Walk back in there," I said. "Show them that."

Daniel lowered the phone.

"Show your mother. Show your board. It'll take one minute. You asked me for one."

"I can't."

"You can. You just did it for me."

"Not today." He put the phone in his pocket. "Lena, listen to me. If Vanessa goes down, the presales go down. Seventy of those names are hers. Her friends, her cousins. Your aunt."

"My aunt put her own name on a fake sale."

"Your aunt will be in front of a judge if this comes out before the deal closes." He stepped closer. "Is that what you want? Your father's sister in the newspaper?"

I stared at him.

He had found the truth last night.

By ten this morning he'd already worked out how to use it.

"Here's what I'll do," he said, very fast and very low. "Rutherford signs. The lenders are paid. On the thirtieth of May I stand up anywhere you like and say it. To my mother, to your family, to every person she ever told. I'll clear your name in front of the whole city."
