Chapter 4: One Star
On Thursday morning Mei turned her phone around on the counter and said, "Don't throw anything."
It was Vanessa's account. Forty thousand followers.
The photo was from Monday, taken from behind a pillar in Rutherford's parking garage.
Me, stepping into the private elevator with my empty bucket.
Holden's hand at the small of my back.
The caption was long. I read it once.
"Three years ago my cousin emptied my fiancé's bank account the week her own father died. We forgave her. We kept quiet. This week I watched her climb into a married billionaire's private elevator. Some women never change. Ladies, guard your husbands. #SmallHoursFlowers"
She'd tagged my shop.
"Scroll," Mei said.
I scrolled. Seventy-one one-star reviews since midnight.
"Thief." "Homewrecker." "Do the flowers come with her or is that extra?"
Two orders had cancelled by email before eight.
One of them was a funeral.
"I'm going to find her car," Mei said, "and I'm going to put a dead fish in the vents."
"Where is she today?"
Mei checked. "Riverside. 'Exclusive VIP preview for our first owners, champagne at eleven.'"
I took off my apron.
"Lena. What are you doing?"
"Going to the river."
The Zhang Riverside presentation centre was a glass box on the edge of the Fraser, with white leather sofas and a scale model of the tower under a spotlight.
Behind it, the real tower rose twenty-two floors into the rain, gray concrete and two cranes.
Under all of it was my father's yard.
I parked my old green Honda between a Porsche and a Tesla and walked in.
There were forty people inside with champagne flutes.
Vanessa stood by the model in a white suit, a microphone in her hand.
"Every residence faces the water," she was saying. "This land has a story. It's been waiting for the right family."
