Chapter 15: Records Room
I held the keycard all the way down in the elevator.
It was light. It felt like it weighed ten pounds.
In the car, Trish turned around in the driver's seat and looked at me.
"Tuesday night," she said. "I'm in."
"No."
"I've got black leggings. I can be very sneaky."
"You laugh at your own jokes in movie theaters. You're not sneaky."
"Then what are you going to do with it?"
I looked at the card.

I thought about what Edward's lawyers would do with one photo of Beth Fairweather in a records room at night with a card she wasn't issued.
"I'm going to do it the boring way," I said.
The boring way took three weeks.
On Wednesday I called the number on the investigator's card and told her everything, including the keycard.
She was quiet for so long I thought the call had dropped.
"Don't use that," she said finally.
"I wasn't going to."
"Good. Then give me two weeks."
She needed a records request with the state's seal on it, signed by her director, for the Lowther Suite's delivery logs and filed worksheets going back five years.
