Chapter 18: The Vow Renewal
Griffin found his father in the study at noon on Saturday, in the dark, with the door shut and the blinds down.
"I'm not coming," Garrison said.
"I know. I came to ask you anyway."
"I have read her statement three times." Garrison did not turn around. "I got my son home by letting a girl rig his signature. What kind of father does that?"
"The kind who's about to watch his nephew get caught."
Garrison turned.
"It's a trap, Dad. Tobias thinks I'm going to insult you in my vows. I'm going to insult you in my vows. It's all part of the plan."
"What insults?"
"That you've never read a contract in your life."
Garrison looked at the ceiling.
"That's fair," he said.
"I'll make it worse if you want."
His father took his jacket off the back of the chair.
The ballroom of the Oakes house held sixty guests and a string quartet, and in the front row sat Tobias with his phone in his lap and a large arrangement of white lilies at his elbow.
The lilies had a lens in them.
Griffin saw the glint from the aisle and kept walking.
Imogen stood beside him in white, with the stud pinned at her shoulder. Her hand was cold in his.
Behind the last row, six foot five and holding a tray, stood the club's former doorman, next to a twenty-three-year-old at a laptop who did not seem to want to move.
Winifred sat in the second row with her cane across her knees.
Garrison stood at the back. He had come in last and did not sit.
The officiant cleared his throat and gestured.
"The groom will say a few words."
Griffin took out a folded card and cleared his own throat, loudly.
