Chapter 21: Boots Off

Griffin got both boots off, and then his socks, because she was still watching.

The chairman looked at the ceiling. The treasurer, for reasons nobody asked about, applauded.

Imogen stepped out of her own heels and left them on the carpet.

"The rest at home," she said.

They crossed the Sutherland Corp lobby barefoot, her hand tight in his, past a security guard who decided to look at his clipboard.

The sunroom door hit the wall behind them.

Imogen did not take him upstairs.

She took him into the one room she had sworn to leave alone and kissed him against the wicker couch.

"Nobody cleans this room," she said, between kisses.

"Nobody."

"Then I can't put my jacket on a hanger."

"Throw it."

She threw it. It landed on the rope bracelet.

He undid her blouse button by button, and she let him, shaking, with the window light all over her.

"You were here," he said against her collarbone. "All the way through. In that suit."

"Both of us were."

"Say it."

"I was Jo. I'm Imogen." Her breath caught. "I'm both, Griffin, and I'm so tired of picking."

"Don't pick."

He laid her down on the cushions and knelt beside her, and he kissed his way down her body without hurry. Her throat. Her breasts. The soft stomach she kept covered in gray wool.

Her fingers went into his hair and held on.

"Hello, Jo," he said, to her hip.

She laughed, and it turned into a gasp.
