Chapter 14: The Pelt
There was a card pinned to the tissue in Morcaine's small, round hand.
"Something to remember him by."
On the stairs, Odalie burst into tears.
Papa came down behind her and held on to the banister.
The Duke didn't make a sound.
Ianthe looked up at him, and his face had gone the color of the snow on the step.
She knelt on the hall floor and lifted the pelt out of the box.
She turned it over until she found the left shoulder, and she ran her thumb down it.
No arrow hole.
No long pale scar.
No neat little rows of stitches.
"That isn't mine," she said, and she said it to his face. "Mine had a scar on his shoulder. Stitched in rows, the way a surgeon would."
The Duke stared down at her.
"No," he said, very low. "It isn't."
He began to pull on his gloves.
"Stay here, Lady Ianthe."
"Where are you going?"
"Morcaine House."
"To do what?"
"I'm told I'm mad," he said. "I'd hate to disappoint anyone."
Ianthe got up and stood between him and the front door.
"If you kill him in his own drawing room, the War Council has its mad duke by supper. He wins from his grave."
