Chapter 16: The Witch
For a moment nobody round the bonfire said a word.
Then the Marquess of Morcaine laughed.
It was a gentle, sorrowful laugh.
"Of course he says so," Morcaine said. "Look at him, Your Highness. Look at all of them."
He turned to the court with his ringed hands open.
"You see how quickly a sworn man changes his oath."
His voice dropped.
The court had gone very quiet.
A lady near the front drew her skirt away from Ianthe's.
Then another did, and a gap opened round her on the ice.
"I don't say it lightly," said Morcaine. "But I have seen sorcery in the north. I know what it does to good men."
"That's a lie," said the Duke.
"It's a question," Morcaine said mildly. "For the High Temple. Not for a man whose wits are in doubt."
The Prince was delighted.
"Witchcraft! Oh, that's much better than pearls."
He snapped his fingers at a priest by the braziers.
"The High Temple will examine Lady Ianthe at the Midwinter Court, before my father. Three days. I'll make sure he's awake for it."
