Chapter 18: The Lap
Cassiel had faced cavalry with less warning than his grandmother gave him.
She crossed the library with surprising speed for a woman of seventy-two with a cane.
She put the candle down on the desk.
Then she picked up a painted fan somebody had left on the blotter, and hit him with it.
On the bare shoulder.
On the old scar, and then the new one.
"Ten weeks," she said. "Ten weeks I wrote to the Emperor. I had the river dragged, Cassiel."
"I know, Grandmother."
"You lay with your head in my lap!"
"I know."
"I told you things! I told a wolf you were the only good thing I'd made in my life, and the wolf sighed at me!"
Ianthe was doing up her hooks behind him, very quietly, and failing.
His grandmother hit him once more, on principle.
Then the fan dropped, and she put both her small hands on his face the way she had in the ballroom, and cried.
Cassiel had never seen her cry.
Not when his mother died, and not when his father did.
