Chapter 22: The Old Woman's Word
Nobody in the throne room breathed.
Then the Marquess of Morcaine sighed, gently.
"Mad," he said. "As I said, Majesty."
The Crown Prince laughed first.
Then the whole court laughed, the way it had in the ravine, a great rolling wave of it off the gilded walls.
Somebody barked.
Somebody else howled.
Papa, at the front of the crowd, said in a small, clear voice, "The wolf? He slept in my kitchen."
That made them laugh harder.
Cassiel stood beside Ianthe with his jaw set and didn't move.
Ianthe stepped forward.
"Majesty," she said. "You asked what word I said through the kennel boards."
The laughter thinned out.
"It was his name. Cassiel."
"If saying a man's name is sorcery, Majesty, you may charge the whole room. They are about to learn it."
Someone tittered.
"You may laugh," Ianthe said. "But don't ask me. Ask the woman who did it."
At the back of the hall, Cassiel's sergeant opened the doors.
The old woman came in on his arm, wrapped in the Dowager's second-best shawl.
