Chapter 17: The Invitation Upstairs
Ruby's POV
Deborah announced she and Bram were going for a walk in their good shoes.
It was raining.
Bram looked at the window, then at his wife.
She handed him his umbrella before he could object.
Osric stood in our kitchen holding two cups of tea.
I had invited him after the ridge gathering.
I'd expected my relatives to be less conspicuous about leaving.
"You needn't go," I told them.
"We like walking," Deborah said.
Bram glanced at his polished shoes.
"We've recently discovered it."
They left through the kitchen door.
The umbrella struck the frame on its way out.
Deborah told him not to open it until they were outside.
Osric set our cups on the table.
"I could leave first," he offered.
"Then they'd have to explain what they're doing in the rain."
