"Yes," Osric told Corwin.

The envoy waited for an explanation.

Deborah came back carrying a plate of buttered toast.

"Will your witnesses need a snack?" she asked.

The pack members behind Corwin became interested.

Corwin moved aside before they could accept.

"The intended consort arrives in the morning," he said.

"Your Majesty should consider what sort of household you wish to establish."

Osric took his coat from our hook.

"I have considered nothing else all evening," he said.

He thanked Deborah and Bram.

"Will you be there tomorrow?"

He asked it without looking at his envoy.

Sabine Bracken arrived at the pack hall in flat shoes and a wool coat.

Then she got out with a paper bag under one arm.

"My biscuits broke," she told Osric.

"I'm offering them anyway."

The king looked in the bag.

"Thank you."

Corwin reached for it.

"The kitchen will prepare a suitable presentation."

Sabine held it higher.

"They won't become unbroken in a bowl."

I liked her immediately.

That was inconvenient for Corwin, who introduced me as an interim local companion.
