Chapter 12: The Guards' Graveyard
Hakon woke alone, and the second bed was empty, and the door was unlocked.
It was still dark.
He dressed in a hurry, buttoning his coat wrong, and went down the tower stair two at a time.
Joren was not in the yard, or the refectory, or the stables.
At the gate the night porter said, without being asked, that the Sworn Guard had gone out an hour ago.
He had gone on foot toward the river road, in his plain coat.
Hakon ran.
The palace stood on its hill with the first grey light behind it.
He came up the back lane by the kitchens and over the low wall into the old garden on the east side.
He knew where it was.
Every royal child knew.
Beyond the garden, behind a yew hedge, a small walled field ran out along the cliff edge to the foot of the east parapet.
The Guards' Graveyard.
Rows of plain stones stood in the wet grass, each cut with a name, a year and the word Fell.
Hakon had been brought here once, at nine, to lay a flower on a stone he did not understand.
Joren stood at the end of the third row.
He stood very straight, in his old brown coat with no insignia, and his hands hung at his sides.
Hakon stopped at the gate.
He had never seen Joren in this place, and he had been here a hundred times in his mind.
