Chapter 15: The Lamp
Joren did not sleep.
He lay on Hakon's narrow bed with Hakon's head on his shoulder and watched the fjord go from black to grey.
Hakon slept soundly, his face young and unguarded.
One arm lay flung over Joren's chest.
His breath was slow and even against Joren's collarbone, and the silver crescent on his hip made a faint steady glow under the blanket.
Joren put his palm over it, and the light dimmed.
He had forty minutes before the bell.
He spent them making a decision.
If the lamp lit, he would step forward first.
He would say that he had forced the Crown Prince, with his body and the weight of his oath.
He would say Hakon had been too frightened to refuse.
It would be a lie, and it would hang him.
It would also save Hakon, who would walk out of the Moot Hall a victim and a prince.
He had worked it out on the road north two years ago, when he thought he would never see Hakon again.
