Chapter 22: Ask Me Properly

Larissa's POV

We did the asking on Sunday afternoon, in the clearing at the Gathering Stone, with both packs standing in the snow.

Ashgrove was three deep around the ring in its good coats.

Stonecrest had come down the mountain in a line of trucks and stood across from them.

Wynne stood at the front in her fleece with her badge pinned on crooked.

Brock stood at the back with a bandage over his nose.

He did not meet my eyes, and I did not make him.

I had not slept.

I stood on the gray slab in my father's canvas jacket.

My braid was done up properly for the first time in a week, and I waited.

Corbin walked into the ring alone.

He had taken off the scarf, and the burn around his neck had faded to a pink band.

His left hand was bare.

He walked to the Stone and stopped in front of me.

He did not look at the crowd, or at the seven Alphas who had stayed over to watch.

He looked at me.

"Larissa Aldren," he said.

His voice carried to the back row.

"Fifteen years ago you almost died, and I gave you half my wolf without asking. Last week I told seven Alphas you were mine without asking. I'm done not asking."

Somebody in the crowd said, "About time."

Wynne.

"Will you be my mate?" Corbin said.

"Will you stand beside me as an equal, with your own name and your own pack?

"Will you go on hitting me in the training hall? I'd rather be hit by you than loved by anyone else."

I laughed.

I could not help it.

The crowd laughed too, and it was a warm sound.

Then I stopped, because he was not laughing, and his hands were shaking at his sides.
