Chapter 13: The Quarry Road
We reached the county hospital in nineteen minutes, and Ronan made the truck take every curve in the dark.
A deputy sat on a gurney in the hall with an ice pack on his head and a nurse shining a light in his eyes.
"Never saw him," the deputy said when I asked. "I heard the stairwell door, and then I woke up here."
Anselm's room had a stripped bed, a tipped wheelchair, and a drip bag still swinging on its pole.
I went down the hall to Joanne's room without asking anyone.
She was sitting up against the pillows with her arm in a sling and her cracked glasses back on her nose.
"I'm fine," she said. "Sit down before you fall down."
"Did you see who took him?"
"I heard them. Two men, one in scrubs, one with a limp." She pulled the blanket straight. "The one in scrubs smelled like lake clay. I know that smell. It's from the old quarry on Mill Road."
"You told the deputy?"
"I told the deputy, and the deputy said the quarry has been closed since the nineties."
"Closed to who?" Ronan said from the doorway.
Joanne looked at the size of him and then looked at me.
"Is that the wolf?"
"That's the wolf."
"Hm," Joanne said. "Go on, then. And Mara?"
"Yes?"
"Write down what you do."
I almost laughed, and then I saw her face.
She wasn't joking.
In the parking lot a man in a Hearthside windbreaker was leaning on a car under the one working light.
He straightened when he saw Ronan, and then he saw me, and he started to walk away fast.
"Stop," I said.
He stopped.
His whole body jerked around to face me.
