Chapter 21: Keep It

"I won't give it back," I said.

Ronan didn't move.

"Mara. Think about the lung."

"I've thought about it since the aunt walked out." I pushed his father's knife to the far side of the desk. "You offered me a clean wrist and a free road. You were honest about the price. Thank you."

"Mara..."

"I'm not done."

He closed his mouth.

"I don't want a free road. I want this house, and the seat, and eleven care homes to walk through with a clipboard." I came around the desk. "And I want you."

"You can't want me for the blood."

"I don't. I wanted you before the blood. I wanted you in the truck on the way to the cabin, and I said something cruel so I wouldn't have to say so."

His breath went out of him.

"The claim," he said. "The aunt..."

"Don't," I said. "Not tonight."

"Why not?"

"Because you'd say it to keep me alive. I want you to say it because you can't stand not to, and I'd like you to have a week to find out if that's true."

His eyes were shining.

"That's cruel."

"It's fair." I took his face between my hands. "Tonight I'm only keeping what's mine."

I stood on my toes and kissed him.

He made a sound in his chest and his hands came up and stopped in the air beside my waist.

"Touch me," I said.

"Is that an order?"

"It's a request. You can say no."

"I won't," he said, and his hands closed on me.

I led him upstairs by his belt, past the open kitchen door where somebody very carefully didn't look.

His bedroom was dark wood and a big bed.
