Chapter 23: The Ceremony
Mara's POV
The moon came up over the courthouse roof at ten past seven, round and white.
I stood at the top of the steps in the green dress Abel had found in a trunk.
My lanyard was still around my neck, because nobody could talk me out of it.
Below me the whole valley stood on the lawn, in rows.
Joanne sat in a folding chair at the front with her arm in a cast.
Anselm sat beside her in his wheelchair with a blanket over his knees.
The north fork's Alpha stood behind him, holding his mother's hand.
The nine Alphas of the Moot stood in a half circle on the lowest step.
On a square of black cloth in front of them lay the knife.
It was long and old and dull.
Nobody looked at it directly.
The gray hat took off his hat.
"The Moot is in session under the full moon," he said. "A human carries the blood of the Ridge. Does any wolf here have a claim to it?"
"I do," said Ronan.
He came up the steps from the dark below, in a clean white shirt, with the scar through his eyebrow and no coat.
He didn't look at the floor.
He didn't look at the knife.
He looked at me, and he walked up until he stood a step beneath me, close enough to touch.
"Say it," the gray hat said.
Ronan's hands were open at his sides.
"Before these packs and under this moon," he said, and his voice carried over the whole lawn, "I name Mara Linwood mine, and I am hers."
A murmur went through the crowd.
"Three years ago I lost everything I was," he said. "Every one of you knew it and kept quiet, and I let you think I was strong. I wasn't. I was a name on a gate."
