Chapter 34: Page Nine

The gray hat came to Ridge Hall that afternoon with a book under his arm.

I had asked him for it on Friday, after the vote, in the vestibule of the courthouse, in a voice so low I barely heard it myself.

"The woman from your grandfather's time," I'd said. "The one the Moot gave thirty days. What was her name?"

He had looked at me for a long time.

"I'll bring you the volume," he had said.

Now he set it down on the kitchen table among the breakfast plates.

It was a ledger bound in cracked brown leather with a strap and a brass clasp.

The placement notice for the oldest aunt lay beside it, still folded.

"Not Faulk's ledger," the gray hat said. "This one is the Moot's own record, in my grandfather's hand. I read it twice when I took the chair, and I never looked at this page again."

He opened it near the middle and smoothed the paper with his palm.

"Page nine."

Ronan stood behind my chair with a hand on my back.

The oldest aunt stood at the stove with her arms folded and did not make a sound.

Anselm had been helped in from his room, and he sat at the end of the table with his cane between his knees.

The entry was written in brown ink, faded almost to nothing.

I read it aloud, slowly.

"Opal Harkness, nurse, thirty-one. Wife of the Cold Creek Alpha. Held his blood after the mill fire. Thirty days given to return it. Used the voice in the ring against three, and was opened at the moon. Died at the moon."

Nobody spoke.

"It's a date," I said. "Sixty years ago this month."

"Yes."

"Opal Harkness."

"That is the name," the gray hat said. "I thought nothing of it. There are many Harknesses."
