Chapter 40: Please

Mara's POV

I stared down at the note.

Then I went down the stairs in my socks and out onto the porch, and the farm truck was gone from the yard.

"Joanne!"

She came out of the kitchen with the folder still in her hand.

"He took the knife," I said. "He took the truck. He's gone to Orchard Hill alone."

"Call him."

I called.

It rang eight times in my ear and went to nothing.

I stood on the boards with the phone against my chest.

Twenty-five miles from me, he was empty.

He would be walking up a road on legs that didn't work, with a knife and an idea.

I had spent the whole week proving to him that I couldn't be trusted to say a word.

"Say it," Anselm said behind me.

He had come out on his cane, in his nightshirt and a coat.

He stood at the screen door with his white beard shaking in the wind.

"Say what?"

"Whatever you've been holding in your mouth since Tuesday. I've watched you do it all week."

"It hurts him."

"Who told you that?"

"She did. And I saw the sleeve."

"The Director told you it costs him when you push." He nodded slowly. "That's true. I never said it wasn't."

"Then what are you saying?"

"I'm saying I knew his mother for forty years."

He came out onto the porch and lowered himself onto the top step.

"She held the Ridge for thirty of them," he said. "I never heard her give one order. She asked. She asked a man to lift a beam the way you'd ask a neighbor for a ladder, and he lifted it, and he thanked her."

I stared at him.

"Girl, you carry the Ridge blood, and she held the Ridge," he said. "Ask."

I thought of the basement room with the drain.

I thought of the young escort's knee bending an inch while his nose bled onto the tile.
