Chapter 14: What He Kept

"Get up, Joss," I said.

"Luna."

"I'm not your Luna yet. Get up and help carry him."

Joss rose, and two of the guards lifted Garrick between them.

His head lolled.

His eyes found me through the grey fall of his hair, and the old charm came back into his face for one last try.

"You think he's clean," Garrick said hoarsely.

"Be quiet," Bram said.

"Ask him how long his scouts sat on the ridge above Sunset Forest." Garrick laughed, a thin wet sound. "Ask him who watched me and Imogen all summer and said nothing."

I felt Bram go still beside me.

He didn't deny it.

That was how I knew.

The guards carried Garrick away up the Ashfall road, and Joss went with them, looking back once.

I walked back across the bridge with Bram beside me and Hester behind us, and nobody spoke until the lodge door shut.

Then I turned around.

"How long?" I said.

"Cora."

"How long did your patrols watch my husband with his brother's widow?"

Bram set his hands flat on the table.

"Since the end of the summer. Eight months, near enough."

"You knew when you stood at the tree line."

"Yes."

"You knew when you told me you'd been waiting for me to be free."

"That part was true."

"You knew," I said, "and you let me walk into that hot spring in black lace."

"I didn't know about the spring. I didn't know Joss was bringing you."
