Chapter 20: Imogen's Fall
Imogen turned around slowly, with her hands folded at her waist.
Her face was calm, and her eyes were wide and wet, and she was every inch the grieving widow.
"Cora, dear," she said. "You're hurt. You should sit."
"The bottle in your hand yesterday," I said. "Where did you get it?"
"It was in your trunk."
"And the bottle in Garrick's tonic?"
"I have no idea what that is."
The old Ashfall elder held it up between two fingers.
"Same glass," he said. "Same brown, same stopper. I've seen a hundred of these. They come from one apothecary in Duluth."
"Half the county buys from that apothecary," Imogen said.
"I saw her mix it," said a voice from the Ashfall line.
Joss walked out into the ring.
His face was white, and he didn't look at me.
"Three nights ago. In the pack house kitchen, at the stove. I thought it was herbal. She told me it was for the Alpha's nerves, and not to mention it, because he was proud."
"Joss," Imogen said, and her voice cracked. "You're a boy. You don't understand what you saw."
"I saw you stir it with a silver spoon."
A ripple went through the warriors.
I limped forward, with Bram's arm still around me, and stopped an arm's length from her.
"You told me the black lace was what he wanted," I said. "You brushed my hair and sent me to that spring."
"That was kindness."
"You said, 'He never looked at you in it.' You said it as I stood in the snow with my ring in the water."
"I was upset."
"You were telling me the truth, and you enjoyed it."
