Chapter 22: Winter Moon

Bram's POV

The winter moon rose over the river clear and full, and I had been dreading it for ten weeks.

In that time Cora had lived at the cottage on Pike Lake and run Ashfall from a desk in a barn.

I had seen her in council twice and across the bridge four times.

Each time I had said good morning like a stranger, and each time she had looked at me and waited, and I had let her wait.

I didn't ask.

I had promised her a choice.

I could not give her one while I stood in her way.

Both packs gathered at the Moon Stone as the sun went down.

Ashfall stood on the north side with Joss in front, steady and pale.

Blackwater stood on the south.

Cora walked out of the pines in her father's grey cloak with the gold Wexley ring on her hand, and my wolf lifted his head so sharply that I nearly made a sound.

She stood across the Stone from me, and she did not smile.

The elder with the squeaking boot cleared his throat.

"The year's term of the Luna's contract ends tonight," he said. "Alpha Haldane, you may renew it, or let it lapse. If you let it lapse, you will have no Luna at moonset, and council law is plain."

"I know the law."

"Then say what you will do."

I looked at her.

It was not hard to say it.

I had been practicing for ten weeks, alone in the lodge, with my hand pressed flat against the table.
