Chapter 24: No End Date
By morning the whole valley knew.
The mark on my shoulder had healed overnight to a neat silver crescent, and it hummed when Bram was near.
I could feel him walking beside me up the path to the Stone, steady and warm, a second heartbeat at the back of my mind.
Both packs were waiting.
Ashfall stood on one side, Blackwater on the other, and Hester stood in the middle with her arms folded and a basket of buns on her hip.
The grey-coated elder stood at the front, looking at the mark on my neck.
"Council law says an Alpha needs a Luna at moonset," he said.
"I was in his bed at moonset," I said. "Is that clear enough, or shall I show you my shoulder?"
A ripple of laughter ran around the ring.
The elder coughed.
"The Stone rang," he said. "It rings for a true bond. I heard it myself." He drew himself up. "The seat is Alpha Haldane's. The council withdraws its motion."
"Thank you," said Bram dryly.
"And I owe Hester a case of beer," the elder muttered. "I bet her you'd never find a Luna."
"Two cases," said Hester. "You said it twice."
Joss, on the Ashfall side, put a hand over his face and shook with laughter.
I took Bram's hand in front of two packs.
There was nobody to perform for now, and that made it easy.
"I have a new contract," I said.
I took a folded paper out of my cloak and held it up.
"The old one ended last night. This is the new one."
Bram raised an eyebrow. "You wrote it yourself?"
"Hester helped with the grammar."
