Chapter 23: Low Tide Night

Damon came down the stairs behind me and stopped on the fourth one.

It creaked.

He saw the card in my hand and his face shut.

"Throw it out," he said.

"No."

"Juno."

"I said your mother doesn't come near our child unless I say so." I put the card back in its envelope. "That means I'm the one who answers. Not you. Not now."

"When?"

"When I want to look at her face while I do it."

I put the envelope in the drawer of the hall table, under the dish with his grandmother's ring.

Another cream envelope came every month after that.

I put every one of them in the same drawer, unopened.

In October I was thirty-eight weeks along, and Low Tide was up for best actress at the critics' awards.

"You're not going," Damon said, the morning of it.

"I'm going."

"You're the size of a small car."

"A small car in custom black velvet," I said. "Bea had it let out twice."

He looked at me across the bedroom.

"If anything happens..."

"Then you'll be in the front row, and you'll carry me out the front door."

The awards were at an old theater on Hollywood Boulevard, two blocks down from where Low Tide had premiered.
