Chapter 22: The Person Who Knows

Natasha's POV

"Where is he?" I asked.

"His office. On the carpet by the window." Rhys's voice cracked. "There's blood on his shirt, Natasha. I called his name. He's not answering."

"Is he breathing?"

"Yes. Shallow."

"Roll him onto his left side. Gently. Put something under his head."

I was already moving.

Byron had his keys in his hand and my coat over his arm.

"Call nine-one-one now," I said. "I'll stay on with you."

"I already did. They said six minutes."

"Tell them what I tell you. Write it down if you can't remember."

"I can't write, my hands..."

"Then say it back to me."

He said it back.

Bleeding ulcer, I told him. Allergic to penicillin. No aspirin and no ibuprofen, not even once, and the paramedics have to know he takes a prescription for his stomach, a white pill, forty milligrams, once a day.

"How do you know all of that?" Rhys said.

"I've counted his pills every Sunday for four years."

Byron was driving.

He had not asked a single question. He drove fast and kept to the center lane.

"They're here," Rhys said. His voice was thin with relief. "They're coming in the door."

"Give the phone to the first one."

A stranger's voice came on, calm and young.

I told him the list in order.

"Thank you, ma'am. Are you his wife?"

"No," I said. "I'm the person who knows."

We reached Aspinwall Tower as the gurney came through the lobby.

I had walked through those doors for four years.

I had never seen them used like this.

The paramedics had Porter on a stretcher with an oxygen mask over his face.

His eyes were open. They were glazed and wet, and they found me at once.
