Chapter 19: What Caleb Did

Caleb's POV

The text I deleted outside Dolan's was a photo of Carys's office building.

It came from a number I didn't know, and under it was one line.

Tell her I'm not done.

I let Carys think it was a customer.

I'm not proud of that, but I had already learned what happens when I keep a secret to protect her.

This time I was going to do something about it before she ever had to hear it.

At six the next morning I sat in my truck outside Joss's building on Logan Street.

She buzzed me up without asking who it was.

She opened her door in a silk robe with a cup of coffee, and she smiled at me.

"Caleb," she said. "I knew you'd come."

"Can I come in?"

"Of course."

I stepped inside and left the door open behind me.

Her apartment was spotless, and every surface held a ring light or a tripod.

My phone was in my breast pocket, recording.

"You sent the picture," I said.

"What picture?"

"The one of her building."

"Oh, that." She sat on her arm of the couch and crossed her legs. "I was walking by."

"You live on Logan Street."

"Do I?"

I didn't sit.

"Joss, I came to tell you something. You are going to leave her alone."

"Or what?"

"Or I take every piece of what I know to the platform that sells your guide. I know you changed those bookings. I know you used my phone on the Lisbon call. I'm done keeping quiet."

She laughed.

"You? You've kept quiet for two years. You watched me do it."

"That's mine to carry," I said. "I said so in front of fourteen people last night."

Her smile slipped a little.

"You and I were friends, Caleb. Before Carys, you and I talked. I helped you with your website."
