Chapter 21: The Seat
Leon turned his back on his father and faced me.
"Lena Guthrie," he said, loud enough for the back wall. "By a husband's word, before the packs, I release you from my name and from my house."
The words fell into the hall.
Something in my chest let go.
It was the cord I had pulled against for four years.
It was not the bite, and I knew that at once, because the bite was still beating.
But I was no longer Leon Ramsay's wife.
"Thank you," I said.
"Don't," Leon said. "Not yet."
The old Alpha rose from her chair.
She crossed the floor to where Timothy knelt on the boards, grey and shaking, and she took his right hand.
A thick silver ring sat on the third finger, heavy and worn, with a wolf's head cut into it.
She worked it off.
It took a while, because his knuckles shook.
"Timothy Ramsay," she said. "You cast out your firstborn and told your pack he was dead. You walked a wolf into a bride's room without her knowing and bound her to him for your own strength. You let a pack run on stolen blood for four years and stamped her letters Not yet."
"I held this seat," Timothy said. His voice was a rasp. "I held it when nobody else could."
"You held it with another man's arms. The council strips you of the seat and the name of Alpha. No pack in these mountains will shelter you. Go."
Nobody moved.
Then the wolves along the wall drew back from the door, one by one, and left a lane down the middle of the hall.
Timothy got to his feet.
He did it slowly, with a hand on the table, and I saw how old he was.
